Mt. Yale

This past weekend we made our way West to the Buena Vista area and the Collegiate Peaks for another 14er attempt. Originally we were hoping to ski Mt. Yale, but the snow is so poor this year that outlooks for skiing the next couple months aren’t great. The weather was just great, sunny and uncharacteristically warm for January. We did a little exploring around on Saturday and checked out an alternative route up the East ridge. After cooking some soup for supper, we soaked in the nearby Cottonwood Hot Springs. This was followed by a long night trying to sleep in the truck since we forget our sleeping bags. We had some silk liners and sheets, but they did not do too much! On Sunday, we made our way up the standard Denny Creek trail up Mt. Yale.

Besides some mild altitude sickness from not hiking at altitude for a while, the climb went great and we made it to the summit in a little over 4 hours, with pretty easy hiking conditions. That’s not say we weren’t feeling fatigued and beat! Maddy just had a blast and kept on running ahead up the trail and up to the ridges.

She loves the summits and just sniffs the wind with her eyes closed. After some peanut-butter and jelly sandwiches, we made our way back down, which went considerably quicker.

I’m looking forward to being done with the 14ers in the Sawatch range (1 left), because the approaches are not much fun and all seem to be the same after a while.

Brrrrrr! I think I would have slept by those hot springs 🙂 Looks like a beautiful hike. The pictures at the top look like you are at the top of the world.

Poor snow quality is an understatement. Whatever was left is soon to be gone.

Glad to see your making the best of it.

Finally! I was waiting for this entry. Congratulations on completing another 14er. I loved all the pics and the blue sky. Particularly liked Nea approaching the summit, and the summit pic of the three of you was a winner! For me the hot springs looks most inviting. Who gets the coal for forgetting the bags? Love, Mom M.

It looks like the San Juans got a pretty nice dose of snow this weekend, now if only it could make its way to the Front Range. I’m hoping to get out to Loveland at least a couple times if it ever picks up and try out my new skis.
