Pikes Peak Climb

On Saturday, Linnea and I hiked up Pikes Peak on the Northwest Slopes approach from the Crags trailhead, which is on some Forest Service access just across Mueller State Park. Bruce, another climber from our HAMS class, joined us. Overall, the hike was great conditioning for our Rainier climb in July, and I was pleasantly surprised by the nice trail and conditions. I had to do a lot more convincing to get Linnea motivated since she was still a little tired from the R2R2R. We camped in the truck the previous night and got off to an early start around 6:00a. A little over 6.5 miles, 4300′, and 4 hours later, we made it to the top. We weren’t so sure what the weather was going to do, but it ended up being a great day and winds above treeline we’re too bad. We enjoyed a nice lunch behind the warming hut, and I resisted the sweet smell of doughnuts (probably because I forget my wallet). Linnea finally hit her limit and she ended up having to hitch-hike back down. Just kidding 🙂 The hike back down was quite nice and the sun came out intermittently. The snow ended up being easy to hike on too, a little icy in spots, but no snow-shoes or spikes were necessary. Maddy had a blast too trying to keep up with Bruce’s new puppy.
