Spring Break (Part 1)
It was Spring Break which called for a road trip and adventure. David was busy with work, friends visiting from MT, and playing his trumpet in church. So I headed out on my own towards Pagosa Springs in southern CO and enjoyed camping near the Piedra River on some Forest Service Land. I think David was a little nervous about me being out on my own in the middle of nowhere but it turned out to be very peaceful and a refreshing stop. On Thursday I made my way to Mesa Verde Nat’l Park. Most of the park was shut down for the winter but I enjoyed a short hike in Spruce Tree Canyon past the house and out to some petroglyphs. Plus, I got to see some beautiful views of the Cliff Palace. I wandered through the visitor center before heading out to browse through some Native American art stands along the highway. In addition I got to see both Chimney Rock and Shiprock which I had read about in stories or histories of pioneers. Finally I made it to Four Corners Monument in the nick of time. It was 4:50 and the monument shuts down at 5. Luckily a nice gentleman waved me in and said to quickly snap some pictures which is all I wanted. I crashed somewhere near the border of New Mexico and Arizona on Thursday night in preparation for an early start to the Grand Canyon on Friday. But that is a whole other story and post.
To say the least I was glad to see a little more of the Southwest. While at Calvin I led a Spring Break Trip for the Service Learning Center to Gallup and Rehoboth. Ever since I’ve wanted to go back and see more. It was just as beautiful as I remembered it.

Beautiful pics, Linnea! We have great memories of Mesa Verde, and trying to squeeze through little places. I believe the kids got the greatest bang out of something called the “See Poo Pah.” Ask David if he remembers it. So glad everything went so well; David had good reason to be a little nervous. Looking forward to the second post. Love, Mom
