Waikiki Beach

The one in Washington state, not in Hawaii! It turns out the beach has pretty sweet body-surfing, body-boarding, and even surfing and by far was my favorite spot to spend the afternoons. It sits on the Columbia, in somewhat of a cove, at the beginning of the very long jetty that extends out to the Pacific. Everyday around lunch, the large rollers start coming in off the jetty and they progressively get bigger with the in-coming tide. The water is actually warm, not too salty, and no rip tides to worry about. There’s about a good 2 hour window and then larger waves bring in the ice cold water from somewhere in the middle of the Pacific. No need to wonder when this happens, all the little boys in the water start complaining that they can’t feel their feet, but everyone stays in the water because the waves are so good. On our last day there, I think the whole family was in the water, including Grandpa and Grandma! Probably some of the best body-surfing I’ve had. A group of us probably stayed in the water for over 2 hours straight. Really the only down-side is that along with the cold water at high tide comes in the crab. Yep, we all crunched a few!

I think the only person who didn’t like the water was little William.

My sweet farmer’s tan may have faded towards the end of the week. Okay, not really!

Getting more wet did not change his opinion. Hopefully he doesn’t remember this.

Another morning, we also did a little exploring around Long Beach. Lot’s of little shops, candy, old-time museums, and arcades. I could have played the pinball machines all morning.

Eventually, we ended up at the go-cart track. And no, we did not get kicked out. It’s a good sign when the guys in charge are smoking right under the “no smoking” sign. I think Tirsa actually had the fastest cart. Adriel was the biggest trouble maker and probably had to get baled the most times by the guys in charge. One time, he managed to spin me around on a turn and Kenan, in big double cart, layed on the t-bone with no mercy. I’m not sure where Linnea was in all of this mess. Luckily no one was injured!

It was back to the beach in the afternoon. I was even able to take some snoozes with all the extra help from Aunt’s, Uncles, and Grandparent’s holding William. What a great vacation! We drove by another ocean beach under the North Head lighthouse on the way out, but no time to check that one yet.

I can’t believe Dave forgot to mention we saw a black bear on the side of the road out to the beach on Saturday morning!

I knew I forgot something! I was so in shock that I didn’t have time to whip out the camera. It was right in the road, licking probably fish remains off of some boat or truck. Who would have guessed a seeing a bear in Washington!
